Gimik is a relative old timer to the Templar. There are older Templar than he, but they are either in the upper echelon of the heirarchy, been granted grace into heaven and are no longer among them, or are mythical individuals.
His early years were spent in the ranks of the Templar on 13th century Earth, protecting pilgrims on their way to the Holy Land. Gimik met his demise when he was captured by enemy forces and spent seventeen hellish years in a Moorish dungeon. On his final day he and fifty-three others were removed from the dungeon and executed by being burned alive. Unfortunately for Gimik, the fires burned out before killing him, forcing him to endure two days of excruciating pain before finally dying.
The Templar have always considered him a loyal patriot to the realm. He found himself a niche in the Templar heirarchy as a tech-wiz and due to being completely obsessed with alien technology, he came to be known as "Gimmick" which he shortened to "Gimik".
As for the eyewear, it's a by-product of his emersion in alien technology. He considers it an invaluable aid by providing him with abilities such as the enhancement of seeing numerous more spectrums than the human eye, tactical layouts of his surrounding, and telescopic or microscopic perception.
